Dargel Boats

n the “early days,”South Texas Fisherman had a problem. The problem was the miles and miles of shallow waters of the Laguna Madre. In order to get to the fish, there was a need for a better boat - a boat designed to run in very shallow water. Anglers were restricted to staying on the deeper waters of the bay or wading to where the fish were feeding on the flats. Changing conditions and the opening of the Mansfield Cut in Padre Island allowed more reds and speckled trout into the bays. The larger specs and reds were many times found miles from deep water where conventional water craft had to either stop and the anglers walk in or wait for a flood tide. By the time the tide was right, the fish had moved to other shallow areas to feed.

Several fisherman in the the Rio Grande Valley had been experimenting with flat-bottom plywood boats with a slightly turned up bow and small outboard motor. The “scooter” was steered by the operator shifting his weight. These little boats worked very well, and some of the more adventurous anglers even took these little crafts a short distance out into the Gulf. Quality and pride in its workmanship has been the way Dargel has operated since the beginning. It is something that has helped the company through hard business times as well as through the good years. Through the years the business grew and Russell was joined by his son Rusty, recently the reins have been handed over to Cleve and Miriam Ford. Miriam is the Great Niece of Russell.

Hilmark Boats Inc is proud to offer boats based on the original wooden boats design off the vintage “Tyee Row Boat”, used throughout the 1900’s in Campbell River, BC. Hilmark Boats Inc continues a fine tradition of Wooden Boat Building, featuring reclaimed old growth wood. The original Tyee wooden boats were built by Ned Painter from the 1920’s until 1932 and then again in the 1950’s. Hilmark Boats Inc offers high quality, handcrafted, traditional wooden boats including the Tyee Row Boat, the beautiful Campbell River Classic Row Boat, as well as new traditionally designed wooden lapstrake boats from W. J. Simmons of Duck Trap Woodworking.

Hilford Burton was born in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. At 12 years of age his father bought him a boat and said, Fix it and it’s yours to keep. Key Largo Fishing Boats

Certainly there is a boat in their line perfect for you. Key Largo Boats are sold exclusively through our extensive national dealer network. They do not sell to retail customers factory direct nor do they quote prices. Sales and pricing are the responsibility of the stocking dealer. A Key Largo Boat is created by first applying wax to the boat mold. This task is done by hand which ultimately produces the mirror like finish you see on the complete Key Largo Boat.

The next application of the boat building process is the skin coat. The skin coat is a layer of fiberglass that reinforces the gel coat. Synthetic core materials, fiberglass mat and fiberglass roving are hand laid into the mold over the gel coat for consistent strength and uniformity of thickness. A blend of polyester resin and metered catalyst completely saturate the fiberglass and bonds the multiple layers of glass reinforcement together. Each fiberglass layer is hand worked into every facet of the boat mold for complete lamination and therefore strength of the part.
