Alloy Yachts

What started out as an ambitious project to build a 28m aluminium yacht by a group of New Zealand boat builders in the early 1980s led to the creation of Alloy Yachts just two years later. During the 1980s, a 12-13m yacht was considered large by New Zealand standards where the focus was on light displacement, relatively austere, high performance sailing yachts. The use of aluminium for the 28m Chanel (right) and the greater attention to the owners desired luxurious finish created a new level of skill and performance amongst the local boat builders involved. With the next project the tender launch for the 1987 New Zealand Americas Cup challenge the foundations for todays highly-rated aluminium superyacht building team were laid.

Many people involved in those first two projects remain as key members of the Alloy Yachts team, including Tony Hambrook who joined the company as production manager and was asked to take over as managing director in 1990. Through the 90s Tony led the team through a period of massive expansion. A series of innovative developments in technology and engineering moved the company up the hierarchy of the worlds superyacht builders. Several yachts mark the advances achieved by the Alloy Yachts team, including the completion of their first yacht over 100ft in length in 1991. With the first carbon-fibre mast and an efficient fully-battened mainsail, 32.6m Esprit featured the transfer of technology from Americas Cup design into the superyacht cruising domain.

Wooldridge Boats

Memories are many for four generations of the Wooldridge family as they celebrate almost 100 years since the establishment of “Wooldridge Boats.” It was 1915 when “Grandpa” Wooldridge (1896-1986) built his first river boat to make that first-ever float down Oregon’s Rogue River. The evolution of Wooldridge Boats from the past to the present was laced with many firsts, like the first-ever trip up the Rogue River in 1947 (with a prop, of course, no jets back then). Wooldridge designed boats, built boats and blazed a historic trail along the way, guiding such prestigious folks as President Herbert Hoover. The evolution of Wooldridge Boats during these many decades has contributed to the continuity of the product and its customer friendly design.

There is that ever present awareness that folks buy boats to get at the very best of our outdoors and that demands boats that offer superior handling every step of the way. The future of boating seems oriented to a growing desire for boats that offer great load hauling ability and performance with modest power, particularly in the jet boat line. Welded aluminum is obviously the material of choice, with its great strength, resistance to penetration and light weight. The exclusive Wooldridge tunnel is used throughout the outboard jet boat series detailed in this website and it is a key, in concert with unique hull designs, to superior handling.

Grand Banks Yachts

Grand Banks Yachts began its journey in 1956 as American Marine, Ltd. Founder Robert J. Newton and his sons, John and Whit, were running a custom boatyard on Junk Bay in Hong Kong, building heavy sailboats and big motor yachts to designs by the world’s top marine architects Sparkman & Stephens, William Garden, Nat Herreshoff, Ray Hunt and others. In 1962, they commissioned Kenneth Smith, another well-known marine architect, to design Spray a 36-foot diesel powered cruising boat with humble, workman-like lines. A year later, inspired by Smiths design, the Newtons left custom yacht building to focus on producing the first of a line of boats that would come to be known as Grand Banks.

Today, this design is recognized around the world as the Grand Banks Heritage Series, an iconic design built first of wood and then, beginning in 1973, of fiberglass at a new factory in Singapore. The design was so successful, in fact that the general styling of the GB was seized by a score of other builders for fleets of look-alike yachts sold under dozens of names. None, through, could match the quality of construction for which Grand Banks is famed. Peace of mind comes standard on every Grand Banks yacht. Each boat they build is designed to meet Grand Banks’ legendary standards of quality. Decades of proven construction methods, advanced technological innovation, and installation of only the most dependable engines and equipment mean that new owners are already at the helm of remarkably reliable vessels.
