Pygmy Boats Inc

July 2nd, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 123triad

Pygmy Boats Inc. of Port Townsend, Washington is the largest and oldest manufacturer of precision precut wood kayak kits in North America. Started in 1986 by boat designer and software engineer, John Lockwood, Pygmy Boats produced North America’s first computer designed sea kayaks. In 23 years we have expanded our line to include 17 sea kayak models, their rowing skiff, the Wineglass Wherry, and their canoe the Taiga. Whether a paddler is 8 or 80, novice or advanced in technique, they have a craft to suit your needs. In 1970, Pygmy Designer, John Lockwood, took his first extended solo kayak trip–900 miles down the Yukon River. Fleeing the stuffy halls of Harvard, he loaded a collapsible Klepper on the Trans Canadian railroad and headed for Whitehorse in the Yukon.

In 1971 John found the lush Queen Charlotte Islands lying 90 miles off the coast of British Columbia in deep rain forest. Here he built his first stitch-n-glue kayak–an early version of our Queen Charlotte. He wanted a light, rugged kayak which he could pull up beaches, hopping on his good leg. Paddling 4 months out of the year, he ate from the sea’s bounty of mussels, clams, oysters, octopus, salmon, star fish eggs, 7 kinds of rock fish, whelks, etc. A home sown teepee and a string of poles set up along the coastline gave him shelter as he explored the remains of Haida long houses, totem poles, innumerable islands, bays, and streams pouring from steep mountains cloaked in ancient cedar and fir forest. Two and one half years passed quickly. John returned to the U.S. to replenish his funds as a computer software engineer.

Radon Boats

June 30th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 123triad

The Radon Boats history began back in the early 1960s when avid sportsman and construction worker Ron Radon Sr. moved his family from their native Washington State to Santa Barbara California. After learning to scuba dive, Ron Radon was convinced by his buddies to try commercial abalone diving. Ron started diving the local Santa Barbara waters in a 16′ sport fishing boat and soon found he could make a good living doing so. Soon Ron purchased a 20′ fiberglass production hull and modified it to better suit commercial use. After the first season, Ron realized the shortcomings of his boat and decided to design something better. For over 40 years, Radon has been the benchmark by which all commercial diving, fishing and hard core sport boats are measured.

From Alaska to Mexico and throughout the Hawaiian Islands, Radon boats have proven themselves to be the boat of choice for serious fishing and diving. Completely redesigned in the 1990s, the Radon Signature Series meld state of the art construction techniques with time-tested boat building principles. Because Radon boats are sold factory direct, there is no middleman. Because Radon boats are custom made, you get exactly the boat you want! The new Signature Series offers all the features of a sport boat, and the bullet-proof construction that has made the Radon name legendary. All at a price you can afford.

Miller Custom Boats

Since 1952, for over half of a century, three generations of Millers at Miller Custom Boats have been in the custom boat building profession. The desire to build boats has been passed down from Dave Miller to his son Jim, and to Jims son,. Justin. Today, Jim and Justin create hand crafted, hand finished Boat Rods for people who want something they cant get anywhere else. In 1950, Dave built the first Miller Custom Boat in his garage in Culver City. The success of that glass over wood flatbottom prompted Dave to open Miller Custom Boats in Calabasas in 1952. Jim began working with his father in 1964 during the transition to fiberglass bottom halves with traditional wood decks.

With production as high as 3 to 5 boats per week during the 70’s and 80’s, Jim was convinced in 1989 that it was time for refreshing change. Miller Custom Boats has always been known for ski and performance boats, designed and manufactured with excellent tooling, beautiful gel coat and a light-weight, hand-lamination lay-up. Good looking, comfortable and functional interiors, open-bow, hard deck or wood deck, Miller builds the Miller Classics, Evolution and the new Sport Cruiser with care and precision, producing a one-of-a-kind custom boat to each clients specification. Sportique Boats

June 28th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 123triad

Sportique was established 20 years ago, by Mike & Yvonne Keeton currently Directors of Sportique Boats Ltd. The company grew from the desire to build dedicated ski and wakeboard boats, affordable, easy to tow and store, but capable of performance to match any rival. The resultant boats, although naturally improved as the years have gone by, have always been extremely popular, with continued demand for those special hand crafted boats. Quality has always been foremost and the outstanding feature is that Sportique was borne and designed by a skier, and still continues today to offer excellent value with their complete range of boats. The model range includes the 20 XLS, 16 Inboard, 16 Outboard, and the 18 Fisher as well as the new line of Swimming Pools and Log Cabins.

They welcome all comments, criticism as well as compliments, for when you own a Sportique you join a special club appreciating value and quality. They invite you to take a look at their unique construction. Unlike some boat manufacturers who cut corners, they only build their boats from the finest quality materials-and only one boat at a time. They take time to construct their hand-laminated boats the way they should be built-individually layer upon layer. Their expert laminators carefully apply each layer of 100% woven cloth and resin and then finish each inch of the surface to achieve a perfect strength to weight ratio. They take great pride to ensure that every part is built exactly to Sportique quality specifications, with attention to every detail.

Hallett Boats

June 27th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 123triad

Boat industry legends arent made overnight…they are earned through years of experience, successful operation and a talent and a willingness to create original product that stands apart from all the rest. For more than four decades, thats exactly what Hallett Boats has been doing. Earning its reputation by building the finest boats for a discriminating and appreciative clientele. Making a name for itself in the custom boat marketplace that has no equal. When they decide to add a new boat to their line, they start from scratch, with a blank piece of paper and only a concept in their imagination. Eventually the concept is captured in a scale drawing, still months away from becoming a finished new boat. The manual labor phase begins when the initial wooden jig to form the skeleton of the plug is slowly assembled by hand.

Every step must be measured precisely. A deviation of a fraction of an inch can be disastrous when your goal is perfection. When the plugs are complete, a separate mold of each must be made. To accomplish that, the plugs are covered, layer by layer, with fiberglass mat and cloth and soaked with resin. Once cured, the molds are reinforced with a steel framework and separated from the plugs. If the process has gone according to plan, the molds will now be ready with only a minimum of detail work to begin pulling production hulls and decks. For the birth of a new Hallett, the entire procedure may take up to a year or more. But the wait is well worth it as evidenced by our many industry awards from Powerboat and Hot Boat Magazines for outstanding new models.

Goring Gap Boat Club

June 26th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 123triad

The Goring Gap Boat Club was founded in 1991 by a small group who enjoyed messing about on the river but who realised that most people who live in Goring and Streatley did not have access to one of the most beautiful reaches of the Thames. With this aim, some craft were acquired and a base was found at Thames Bank Nursing Home in Goring - the Boat Club was born. The principal aim of the Club was, and still is, to enable local people to enjoy this beautiful stretch of the river through the use of un-powered boats. They estimate that over the years well over 1500 local people have participated in the rowing and other water borne competitions, some of whom have gone on to compete at national level. The Goring Gap Boat Club is one of the largest recreational boating clubs in the Thames valley.

Membership is open to all, from youngsters gaining their first rowing experience to veterans with a life time on the river. Beginners are assured of a warm welcome, and a relaxed and safe introduction to the sport. No previous experience is required, and they provide tuition to all their new members. The clubs’ aims are simple - “…to make it possible for members to enjoy un-powered boating….”. Over the years it’s estimated that 1500 rowers have taken to the water under the guidance of GGBC, many of them competing in the ever popular Goring and Streatley Regatta. They have a large range of boats available from single sculls to eights, the majority of their rowing being in stable fours and quad boats - ideal for getting to grips with the basics before moving on to the finer shells.

Braidbar Boats

June 25th, 2009 | Comments Off | Posted in 123triad

Based on the Macclesfield canal in the rolling Cheshire countryside at the edge of the Peak District, Braidbar Boats have been building narrowboats for the discerning boater at historic Lord Vernon’s Wharf for more than twenty years. They enjoy building just 8 luxury boats each year and they take great pride in our flexibility regarding steel work (thanks to the talents of Tim Tyler) and interior craftsmanship which is both traditional and timeless. They have now built more than 110 narrow boats at Braidbar, all unique in their own right, and more recently incorporating new technologies and innovations as they develop.

They have gathered an invaluable amount of knowledge over the years, particularly where practicality and economy of space are concerned. They sincerely encourage people to come and meet them, see how we work and discuss their ideas. Such a boat is a once in a lifetime acquisition and determining which team you want to build your boat is a very important part of the groundwork. Once the plans have been signed off by the customer and us, the construction of the hull can commence. The majority of their boats have been built on the Tim Tyler shell and continue to do so. Once the shell is complete it is transported to their boatyard where first the ballast is installed, portholes / windows fitted and the shell is then battered spray foamed.
